Lucero De La Tierra‘s insight:

What better way to beat the winter blues than to get outside as soon as the weather is warm enough to sink your hands and some seeds into the ground.  Vegetable gardening in a raised bed has many benefits including the ability to get started early in the season.  The raised beds are warmer than the surrounding dirt, drain better and you control the composition of the soil for the best in amendments, nutrients and drainage.  In my back yard I tacked together som old fence posts and other pieces of scrap llumber that happened to be laying around and made six raised beds.  With that many raised beds and using a square foot gardening plan I can produce plenty of fresh vegetables for my family and friends from early spring to late fall – even in Zone 5!
